Suitable Clothing For Babies And Infants

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

One of the chief requirements of babies and infants besides nutrition is the necessity to be at the right temperature. Babies and infants are very susceptible to being too hot or too cold and also to strong sunlight. From this one may deduce that suitable clothing for babies and infants is of paramount importance.

It is frequently thought that babies and infants generate excess heat and so that they can also deal with cold temperatures naturally, but this is unfortunately not true. A problem is that the effects of too much heat or cold can be delayed so that the real cause of a baby’s discomfort is mis-diagnosed. Sometimes, this can have fatal consequences.

People tend to believe that babies produce too much heat, but this is a myth. The fact is that warm-blooded animals like we mammals are able to generate more heat as we get older and therefore a baby is at the coolest stage of its transition into adulthood. A baby can be a degree or two cooler than an adult at its core.

Regardless of this fact, some cultures have insisted, and some still do insist, on toughening up a young infant. Ways of doing this have been to duck the baby into cold water or to expose it to cold winds with insufficient clothing. This hardening up serves no practical purpose and can be very injurious to the child. It is possible that some peoples in some times used this method to ‘weed out’ their children, although it was never formally described as that.

Some good guidelines that parents can use when choosing clothing for their babies and infants are:

The nature and quantity of clothing should be sufficient to maintain the baby’s core body temperature. A degree or two above that is all right too. The clothing will also have to be regulated to adjust for the seasons and whether you are at home or out walking. Put extra clothing on to go out and take some of it off when you get back inside, just as you would do for yourself.

Avoid wrapping your baby up in layer after layer of tight warm clothing or blankets unless you have to endure extreme cold. You can upset a baby’s thermostat by keeping it too hot all the time. It is far better to aim for a continuous, uniform temperature. A baby that is tightly wrapped in blankets will have its movement restricted and maybe even its circulation hindered. This is obviously not a good idea.

Close-fitting, restrictive, hot clothing will also catch perspiration, which could cause the skin to be held in close contact with damp material for hours on end. This could lead to skin irritation and tenderness. Just as you would change a nappy when it is wet for the same reason.

Therefore, it is better to dress the baby in fairly loose fitting clothes suitable for the ambient temperature and adjust the temperature using a cardigan or jumper or blanket, loosely placed over it. The material is not so important, but you will have to check for allergies both to the material and the detergent you wash it in.

If you keep the clothing simple you will be able to add or remove it easily as you see fit. This is important because most babies find dressing distressing. To this end, try not to use ties, fasteners and pins. Velcro is far simpler. Change all clothing every day to keep germs at bay.

Beginning Aromatherapy: Three Schools Of How To Use Essential Oils

Monday, July 19th, 2010

There’s a real difference in dabbling in aromatherapy and really using essential oils as medicine. Many folks will make use of lavender for rest or tea tree to prevent infections of cuts and scrapes, yet remain unaware of the greater potential essential oils have to offer. One of the barriers is really not knowing what to do with those great smelling little bottles of oil. In Europe, their use has evolved into three distinct methods of use — hopefully by understanding these, you can embark on your own journey of using essential oils as medicine.

It’s important to overcome the idea many Americans have of aromatherapy, relating it only to what we might call “spa aromatherapy”. This is the experience of wonderful smells for overcoming tension and stress, with saunas, hot river rocks, and eucalyptus-scented towels. The true definition of the term is the entire branch of natural medicine dealing with the aromatic chemicals distilled from plants. It doesn’t have to do with us smelling the aromas, it has to do with the chemical nature of the oils themselves.

Since the advent of the “modern aromatherapy revolution”, three major “schools” of use have evolved, each with their preferred method of therapeutic essential oil use. These schools are named after the country in which this method is favored: the German, English and French methods of aromatherapy — relating respectively to inhalation, topical application and ingestion of essential oils.

The German method is the one most people in North America are familiar with. It involves the inhalation of naturally or diffuser-assisted evaporating essential oils. While this most common method sounds simple, the applications can profound. On the more “aroma-therapeutic” end for example, there’s the inhalation of lavender to reduce stress, lessen anxiety and improve sleep. This same result can be achieved with other oils, including sandalwood, ylang ylang, patchouli and more. For these practices, oils can be inhaled straight from the bottle, from a bath, from a bowel of steaming water, or from an aromatherapy diffuser.

Inhalation of oils offers more “medicinal” applications as well. Breathing in oils for cold and flu care is especially common and very useful. The oils are directly absorbed by the cells lining the respiratory system. Here, the proven antibacterial, antiviral and anticatarrhal (congestion loosening) of the oils can go right to work. Further, this is an excellent means to protect ones self of from catching an infection, as essential oils have been show to actually strengthen the immunity of each cell individually, making it harder for a viral invader from spreading infection.

The leap to topical application is not a big one. In some ways, it’s hard to even discern the two — even when you’re breathing in oils, they’re coming in contact with your body. The basis for the English method is aromatherapy massage. As with inhalation, the therapy ranges from helping transform psychological and emotional conditions, to treating infectious illness. Relaxing aromatherapy massages can have a dramatic effect on one’s well-being. Further, massage is an excellent way to support the immune system, by helping the lymph system flush both with massage strokes and therapeutic oils selected for the purpose. Further, chest and sinus rubs can really break up congestion and help relieve many cold and flu symptoms.

One of the fastest growing uses of essential oils also includes topical application, but wasn’t necessarily in the minds of the developers of the English method: aromatherapy skin care. Essential oils offer an incredible array of therapeutic benefits for the skin — really for every skin type and condition. One can mix and match carrier oils and essential oils to create a perfect personal recipe. Research has show the ability of formulas containing oils like frankincense, sandalwood and rosehip seed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Other oils with high antioxidant contents like sea buckthorn and carrot root can actually slow the aging process. And you’ll smell great while having great looking skin!

Then we come to the French school of aroma-medicine, primarily utilizing essential oils taken internally in very small amounts. The concept has been very controversial, though this controversy seems unfounded. It’s not that taking oils in this manner is dangerous, it’s that ingesting essential oils without knowing what you’re doing can be dangerous — there’s a big difference. Knowledge is crucial using this method, as it limits the margin for error.

The protocols used by French doctors involve very small amounts of essential oils. These are in the range of one to three drops at a time, up to three times daily. This is different than tossing back a bottle like a cocktail, which must be what some are imaging when advocating oils never be ingested. The way the doctor/patient/essential oil use worked until only recently (as the movement by big business and government has made using natural therapies more difficult, and in many cases illegal) one would see a doctor specially trained in the use of oils. They would give you a prescription with a specific blend for your condition, and a dosage regime that was used only as long as necessary. While this sort of treatment isn’t available in the States, it’s important to note that oils can and should be used this way if this is the best method to treat an illness.

Now you’re a good bit more knowledgeable on the major schools of the therapeutic use of essential oils. This is important know-how for the beginning aromatherapist, as it opens one’s mind to the great range of possibilities of treatment with the very potent medicines involved in aromatherapy.

Dental Complications For Diabetics

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Diabetes can have various adverse effects on sufferers’ health and one of those ill-effects is dental quality. Diabetics have a problem processing sugars, which often leads to a circumstance called hyperglycemia, which means that there is too much sugar in the blood. The converse of having too much sugar in your blood is having too little and that is called hypoglycemia.

Both conditions are governed in healthy people by insulin and herein lies the diabetic’s problem – the body’s automatic manufacture of insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. Both circumstances can have grave consequences. Too much sugar in the blood can lead to issues with the kidneys, the heart, the eyes and others, while too little sugar in the blood can cause fits and black-outs.

Tooth and gum disease is natural as are any other health problems. Factors that play a part in tooth and gum disease are age, heredity, smoking and oral hygiene, but the diabetic who is often hyperglycemic has a higher probability of developing dental disease.

The diabetic is more susceptible to infection of any kind and one of the most common is periodontitis, which has an effect on the teeth, the jaw bones and the gums. One of the visible symptoms of periodontitis is receding gums, which makes the teeth look unusually large, but also exposes the roots of the teeth to the air and food, causing sensitive teeth. Therefore, diabetics must ensure that they make a special effort to visit their dentist at least twice a year. Periodontitis can result in the complete loss of one’s teeth.

The extra sugar in the blood provides extra food for germs, so they reproduce much more quickly than normal. This rapid build up of bacteria causes red, swollen gums. One of the first signs of gum disease is often bleeding. If your gums begin to bleed when you brush your teeth, make an early appointment with your dentist.

Diabetics, along with those who have an impaired immune system, run a much greater risk of developing periodontitis and so losing all their teeth, if it is left untreated.

Diabetics with periodontitis are not guaranteed to lose all their teeth, but it does have to be noticed and treated early because there are various ways that a dentist can treat the disease.

One of the best tactics is to manage your blood sugar levels in the first place. This has to be achieved in conjuction with your doctor, but it will usually include correct dieting, exercise and taking insulin or a surrogate. Not smoking and maintaining your correct weight are also important.

Not all diabetics have to take insulin. There is much more understood about diabetes, diet, exercise and their inter-relationship these days. Some diabetics can circumvent taking insulin and all the side effects that that would usually involve by not eating sugary or starchy food, by eating low-calorie food often during the day instead of at two or three large meals and by monitoring blood-sugar levels.

This is the best way of avoiding the dental complications that diabetics can suffer.

Health Insurance Tips

Friday, July 9th, 2010

If it’s your first time looking for individual health insurance policy, I’d like to tell you that I know it can be a difficult and confusing task. I was put into a situation a few years ago where I left my job to become self employed.

While I could have gone with COBRA for 18 months and worried about finding an individual plan later, I ultimately decided that it wasn’t worth doing this. COBRA was very expensive (over $400 per month for just me) and I couldn’t really afford something like that since I was going self employed.

Therefore, I came to realize that I would definitely be better off finding my own health insurance policy and I began getting quotes. The first thing I did was visit an office in my town, but I was less than pleased with the prices and benefits available.

I realized that I’d be much better off shopping around for some coverage online, since there was a much bigger selection of potential plans.

I ended up finding something within a few weeks, but nearly made some costly mistakes. I don’t want to see you making the same ones that I did, so here’s some advice that I’d definitely follow if I were you.

Most carriers in the world of individual coverage won’t give you any benefits for conditions that you already have. There are some, however, that are willing to cover some costs associated with the conditions, but you’ll need to make sure that this is the case with whomever you’re looking at.

You won’t be able to see just any doctor that you want, and it may depend on the networks that your carrier represents. While you’ll often have the choice, you can easily look up the doctors in advance before deciding on a policy. I’d definitely recommend doing this.

It’s also important to know where you’ll receive coverage. Some of them will only give you benefits in your home state, which is useless to someone who’s frequently on the road.

Rose Oil: A Beautiful Scent And Effective Healer

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Aromatherapy lovers sometimes forget that rose is — and always has been — the most ubiquitous symbol of beauty. Forget that it’s also been a symbol of love, enduring the same great reign. Forget that it’s been the most revered flower in all of history, and remember this: Rose essential oil may have the most diverse therapeutic applications of any essential oil in use today.

Now more than ever, in these challenging times around the world, the healing power of rose is most needed. It might even be considered that it’s anti-viral and beauty enhancing effects are minor when compared to the dramatic heart opening action this oil has. By opening the heart chakra, this natural medicine can help us both to give and receive more love. And depending on its application, it can also deal with illness and make us more beautiful. So what is true rose oil, and how can we make the best use of it?

All pure rose oils are special for these extraordinary reasons: It takes an incredible amount of flowers to make even the tiniest amount of oil — on average, the yield of essential oil is 1-to-8000. For every 8000 pounds of flowers, 1 pound of oil is produced, thus being one of the most concentrated natural aromatics. Chemically, rose is one of the most complex essential oils, being made up of over 300 distinct natural constituents. This unique make up is the source of its great variety of therapeutic applications.

Two types of rose oils are commonly available: rose absolute, the less expensive of the two, is a liquid solvent extract. The absolute smells most like the flower, being produced under cool temperatures, leaving most of the natural constituents intact. The yield of absolute is relatively high, thus it is the somewhat less expensive variety. Rose otto is this steam distilled oil, and the true “essential oil” of rose. While the absolute retains the deep red color of the flower, the otto is clear or slightly pale yellow and has its own unique aroma. The scent of otto is brilliant and uplifting, with brilliant high notes and a subtle sweetness. The most famous of rose growing countries is Bulgaria, producing the most sought after varieties of each oil type. Rose otto is also produced in large quantities in Turkey, while the absolute is also commonly extracted from flowers grown in Morocco.

When looking at the oils’ therapeutic applications, it is important to take into account the entire mind body/complex — rather than divorcing the two which is so often done in modern medicine. Rose essential oil is very active on a physiological level, however it is when its action on the emotions and spirit are taken into account that rose really shines. otto is a strong antiviral, being used by many folks for its efficacy in treating herpes and shingles. Despite its potency, it is gentle enough for undiluted application to the skin for this use. Rose oils are also profoundly effective tonics for the female reproductive system; they are said to enhance fertility and bring about health for the uterus and ovaries. For these needs, a dilute formula of 3% rose oil can be massaged into the lower abdomen on a frequent basis.

Rose extracts are found in many of the worlds premier skincare formulas. Rose oils are particularly effective for dry and mature skin. Hence the symbol of duty brings about beauty through an overall healing action in the dermis. Rose oils are stimulating to skin cell metabolism, cleansing, hydrating, smoothing, and naturally astringent without being drying. The distillate water of rose, called rose hydrosol, is used as a natural cleansing agent unto itself; it can be applied daily after the face is washed to improve skin texture and impart a healthy glow.

Perhaps the greatest potential of rose oil lies in its heart-opening action. Both the otto and absolutes have this effect, though the otto may be more dramatic. Users report just a drop on their wrists or solar plexus has a profound effect on their emotions, imparting a more open, friendly nature. Indeed, rose essential oil is one of the most important antidepressants in aromatherapy. Its sweet cooling nature works to counter anger and anxiety we see so often in our fast-paced culture. Rose alleviates “hot” conditions of the liver and gall bladder which can make a person irritable; the combination of energetic action on the center of our emotions and on the flow of mind-body-spirit (chi) energy make it the first choice for psycho-emotional aromatherapy for our times.

Using rose oils is very easy and uncomplicated. Both the otto and absolutes are very safe and non-irritating, and can be used at 100% concentrations without concern for anything but perhaps the cost. Pure rose oils are very strong aromatics, and can be significantly diluted and still retain all it’s therapeutic properties. A 10% dilution in Jojoba is very common, and a little bottle will go a long way for aromatic use. This can be massaged in small amounts into the wrists, solar plexus or pelvic region. Rose Otto can be used undiluted on herpes legions, but again, dilution would not reduce the efficacy (with many essential oils, dilution in fact enhances the efficacy). Either otto or absolute can be used in a diffuser, filling your space with a brilliant uplifting aroma. Rose oil can be added to bathwater, or used in a massage formula at between a .5 and 3% dilution as well.

Rose essential oil, and particularly rose otto has the potential to be very transformative. It may be that this revered symbol of beauty and love is now offering us its incredible health-giving effects in its most concentrated and portable form. One of the interesting aspects of our digital age is that while the planet is in peril, positive information and healing materials are available faster than ever. A bottle of rose originating in Bulgaria can be delivered almost anywhere on Earth virtually overnight. If rose oil sound right for you, it’s encouraged that you give it a try — every little bit one can do to open their hearts and bring out their light will make the world a better place for everyone.

Sunburn – Prevention And Treatment

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Summer is around the corner and many people would no doubt agree that it is one of their favorite season, especially if you are an outdoor person. The sunny weathers allow a host of activities to be done, but before we get into full swing of the summer season, you should give consideration as to how you are going to protect yourself against sunburn.

This is because sunburn can be an unpleasant experience, and prolonged sunburn will lead to premature again. Sunburn can also lead to skin cancer in the long run, not to mention that you will feel the full effects of it during the day itself! As such, you should learn how to effectively protect yourself before it ends up killing you.

Sunburn Prevention

The easiest way and the most natural way is to wear protective clothing as well as stay in shades more often. Shirt with long sleeves can provide effective cover for your arms, and having a cap or a hat on can helps protect your face and neck, without being too hot to wear.

For areas where you cannot find adequate protection in terms of clothing, then be sure to apply sunscreen. This is a must have for beach goers and outdoor enthusiast, a sunscreen with SPF 15 is usually enough, however if you have a baby with you, make sure you provide the additional protection with SPF-30 sunscreen.

If you do hit the water, then make sure the sunscreen you apply is going to be waterproof so that the water or your sweat does not rinse them off. The typical period to reapply sunscreen to your body is about 8 hours or so.

If you’re looking to treat sunburn, the most common and popular products are Hydro-cortisone cream and calamine lotion, just apply them as you would with a sun screen to the affected area. More natural remedies are such like Aloe Vera, where its healing properties are excellent for treating sunburn.

Lastly, it is better to prevent sunburn than to treat a sunburn because it is relatively easy to do so. However in the case of extreme sunburn, you are advised to see your doctor immediately.

Looking to revamp your space around the office? Instead of going through renovation you can do that by using office room divider! Find out more about various 4 panel room dividers here!

Dental Care And Pulling Your Own Teeth

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

You would probably be very surprised at how many people actually try to remove their own teeth. It sounds disgusting and very painful, but it is still true and there can be many reasons why people do it. We all know how distressing toothache is and how it always seems worse at night stopping the sufferer from getting a good night’s sleep.

If the tooth is just loose, there should not be too much of a problem, but if you do not know what you are doing, you could worsen the situation. Particularly if there is an abscess.

Dentistry has become very refined over the last 100 years, but before that barbers and dentists shared the same occupation. Anaesthetics were hard to come by, so most adults just became drunk and pulled their own teeth or had someone else do it for them.

People used to use pliers or other carpenters’ tools. Toothache was widespread and it resulted in a lot of suffering. Nowadays, modern anaesthetics and modern practices make pulling teeth or even repairing them almost painless.

However, there are still predicaments when you may want or even have to pull teeth at home. Baby or milk teeth often work loose and fall out without any complications. When I was a child in the UK in the Fifties, it was not uncommon for parents to pull children’s teeth, even though dentists were free for children.

I know of parents giving their children toffee to chew on, hoping that the tooth would stick in the toffee and come out and I have had a tooth tied to an open door and the door thrown shut, pulling the tooth out quickly.

Other situations that may make you want to remove your own teeth is if you live or are holidaying in the wild or in a country where you do not trust the dentists. In some countries, any dentistry work is very expensive, in other countries straight-forward extractions are free or at a set, small fee.

There are other situations when you should never try to extract your own teeth. One of these is if you have gum disease or an abscess. These circumstances can have very serious results for your gums and jaw bones, so you ought to seek proper medical or dental assistance right away.

There are other dangers to pulling your own teeth too. If you snap off a tooth, you will be in more pain than before and you will still have to go to a dentist to have the bottom half dug out of your gum. If you do not disinfect your pliers or and other instruments you run the serious threat of contagion too.

The bottom line is that it best not to try to remove your own teeth if you can possibly get around it for the reasons given above. Another problem for many though is expense, particularly in the United States where dental costs seem to be out of control. With the deepening depression and rising unemployment, there is a danger that some people will revert to pulling their own teeth again, setting dental care standards back a hundred years.

Male Baldness Some Hints To Help .

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Hair loss is a problem area that men (and women) of every age, race, creed and culture suffer with. This article will look at this situation, and put forward several tips that will hopefully be of help to sufferers of hair thinning and male baldness.

As a start, here are a few of the major causes for hair thinning and baldness: one of the major culprits is hormonal unbalances. For example an under or over active thyroid can eventuate in both male and female hair loss.Having said that, undergoing a course of thyroid disorder treatment is often successful. The male and female estrogen and androgen hormones, when out of balance can also be a contributing factor to hair loss, but the aforementioned treatment is usually effective in countering the problem by stopping or slowing down the loss of hair.

One issue which can be overlooked is too much sulphur in the body. This mineral is present in quite a lot of over the counter medicines and is a contributing factor in the progression of the malady. Once it is diagnosed and discontinued, an improvement in general health is quite rapid.

It is a good idea to consult with your doctor at the very first signal of a hair loss problem, such as excessive hair being lost through combing or showering. The sooner the diagnosis, the better the outcome is a good maxim to follow. So, with all that said, are there practical steps one can take to help deal with the problem of balding? Fortunately, yes!

Another good tip is to go for a wavier appearance.Curls give the hair a much fuller look as they alter the surface. Again, blow drying will also help you achieve a similar effect, as it plumps the hairs and helps it to build up more without in any way harming the hair, providing the blow drier is not too hot or overused .

It is best to choose a dye with shades a touch lighter than your own as this will help hide the balding area. Another useful hint is to have a perm. The wavier look will make the hair appear far fuller and well bodied, and keeps a neat appearance longer, on the surface at least. Blow drying after shampooing helps too. It will build up your hair, and as long as you are sparing with its use and the setting is not set permanently at hot it wont dry out and cause your hair to become brittle, and dry out the natural oils. Incidentally, a fine shampoo to use is a protein type, especially if you are a frequent user. These hydrolysed products, which are actually hair thickeners, also make the body of hair much fuller in appearance.

There are special protein shampoos called Hydrolyses, which are designed to thicken hair substantially that you may like to try. A natural remedy often used is to make a mixture of a teaspoonful of white vinegar in about a pint of water and massage carefully into your scalp after it has been shampooed. This is designed to alter the hair balance from too acidic to a more alkaline one. This is the reason for the vinegar. The idea is to achieve, once more, a plumper look. The same effect can also be obtained with the use of raw egg massaged in for several minutes, then rinsed.

A note of caution regarding conditioners: do not overuse, because they have a tendency to cause a dull and limp appearance instead of a full shiny look. Male baldness and general hair loss is not often totally reversed, but by following and carefully applying the above methods, much can be achieved to improve the condition.

Blistering or itchiness of the scalp can indicate this. Male Pattern Baldness Hereditary These are applied to the area that has no or little hair in order to stimulate hair growth or reduce further hair loss. With so many products on the market, it is hard to find the ones that work, compared to the ones that don’t.

People are generally born with at least 100,000 hair follicles; and more are gradually produced over time. The standard hair loss for most is between 50 and 100 on a daily basis. Hair loss that range from 150 or more per day is significant and can be a sign of problematic follicles.
