Will Minoxidil Use Cure Your Baldness?
Monday, November 30th, 2009Those who know these things tell us that over 50 percent of men will experience some form of thinning hair during their lifetime. Most of these cases of baldness in men are caused by is what is known as male pattern baldness, the scientific name being androgenetic alopecia. The good news is that there are 2 products which the FDA has approved as baldness treatments for men and one of these products is called minoxidil. But does this mean that minoxidil use will reverse your baldness problem?
There’s dozens if not hundreds of baldness cures on the Internet. Apart from minoxidil and finasteride none of them are approved by the FDA for use as a baldness treatment, and minoxidil is the only product approved by the FDA for use as a balding treatment by women.
Therefore it makes sense that these are the only products which can be sufficiently scientifically proven to reverse thinning hair in men. And minoxidil is the only product which has sufficient scientific proof that it will reverse thinning hair in women.
If any of the other hundreds of so-called miracle cures for baldness on the internet had sufficient scientific evidence to convince the FDA that they were a successful baldness treatment you can be absolutely sure that the company that manufactured them would apply to the FDA immediately for approval. Getting a product approved as a baldness treatment will make millions, so if they were able to successfully achieve it they would apply for approval today.
But whilst minoxidil is the only FDA approved treatment of thinning hair in both men and women, you do need to understand a few things about minoxidil use before you start using minoxidil to treat your baldness problem.
Obviously minoxidil works to reverse thinning hair or the FDA would not have approved it. But just because it is proven to work doesn’t mean that it works for everybody. Just as there are cancer treatments which are proven to work to treat cancer, they do not work for everybody, and it is not realistic to expect minoxidil to be any different. Do not expect that just because it works for others that it will also work for you, though of course there is a good chance that it will.
Secondly you must understand that if you start minoxidil use to treat a hair loss problem you must commit to a minimum amount of time before you make any judgment about whether it is working for you. 2 months is not sufficient time to use a product before deciding whether it is working. You should commit to a minimum of 6 months and preferably 12 months before you make any decisions about whether minoxidil use is reversing your thinning hair.
And the third thing that you need to understand before beginning using minoxidil for a hair loss treatment is that even if you get an outstanding result you need to continue using the product to maintain that result. Dicontinuing minoxidil use, even amongst those with demonstrated reversal of hair loss, will result in the thinning hair returning.
Clearly using minoxidil works to reverse thinning hair in men and women but this does not automatically mean that it will work for you. You need to have realistic expectations and need to be prepared to commit to a sufficient trial before making any decisions on how minoxidil is working to you. There is now a new product available which combines minoxidil with a range of essential hair nutrients increases the likelihood that it will work for you, however this also is not guaranteed to work for everybody.
