The 5 Worst Threats To Your Kids At Sleepaway Camp And The Questions That Will Prevent Them

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Summer is here, kids are anxious sitting at home, and parents are prepared to give them a break. What better option could there be than to find a wonderful sleepaway camp for your child to experience? However, in order to ensure safety, there are 5 important questions you need to ask the camp leaders before you pay for the camp or help your child pack his bags.

1) What is your screening process for your councilors? Any reputable camp will background screen and drug test their counselors before hiring them on a summer job. They should be looking for criminal records and check employment records.

2) What is the training program for your staff? All staff should be taught basic methods in conflict management in person so they know how to deal with the stresses of working with kids who are missing their moms and dads. First-aid training and CPR classes are a must.

3) What excursions do you have planned from the camp, and how are the leading counselors prepared? Camps will sometimes organize trips that go into a deep part of camp territory or even off camp grounds. These activities can be a wonderful chance for kids, but they increase the probability of danger as well. Ask if the counselor in charge of the trip is certified as RTE, or “respond to emergency” situations. If your child faces special medical challenges, such as asthma or diabetes treatment, consider having them sit out more extreme excursions, such as night hikes deep into the woods.

4) Does the camp have emergency contingencies for all potentially dangerous situations? This can also be difficult to ask, but every camp needs contingencies for common regional disasters: earthquakes, hurricanes, forest fires, and so forth. They should also fully disclose any potentially harmful wild animals and plants in the area.

5) Did you receive accreditation from the American Camp Association? The American Camp Association sets U.S. winter and summer camp standards for health, safety, and operational best practices. they are not familiar with the ACA or cannot show that they are accredited, it shows that they are not operating responsibly.

In conclusion, sleepaway camp can be a great experience for your children. You should consider giving them the opportunity to be exposed to this fine American tradition. It is also a good mental break for you during the summer or winter breaks. However, you should go through the effort to make sure the camp is make the environment and experience safe and comfortable for your kids.

Chris Paul Basketball Camp: A Personal Review

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

I spent this past week at a brand new camp sponsored by NBA All-Star Chris Paul. Partnering up with some top high school coaches from around the area, Chris Paul and his crew drilled us, taught us, and a lot more things that helped us improve our basketball skills.

There were two sessions at this camp; one in the AM, and one in the later part of the day. The morning was reserved for kids aged seven through ten, and the afternoon for everyone else under eighteen years old.

The groups would all receive a talk from Chris Paul, who talked about his time at the Olympics and other times in his basketball career. He would tell stories about when he was a kid dreaming of paying in the NBA, and he would help kids who were struggling in certain drills.

Everything you can possibly imagine regarding the game of basketball was brought up when it came to drills. Between layups and three pointers, free throws, bounce passes, long-range passes, dribbling, picks, screens, and more, everyone benefited from the variety and originality of all of the drills.

After drill sets, the campers would be divided into teams by their ages and they played 5 on 5 scrimmage games on teams from 8-10 players. The teams would compete to play in the championship game, which took place on Wednesday. Chris Paul and others would spectate the games, and a camper of the day would be chosen for either their excellent play, their attitude toward the game, or anything else significant that may have occurred.

Another nice touch to it all was the fact that we had the chance to challenge Chris Paul himself in different contests. If we beat him in the contests, they’d reward us with prizes.

My basketball ability definitely rose to a new level as a result of my time spent at the camp. Exercises that were hard for me to complete on day 1 were pretty routine by the end.

The games really gave me an opportunity to go against some of the better high school players from around the US, and also to learn some more in the game skills department. I’ll never forget the experience I had at this camp, learning from perhaps the best point guard today, and listening to his advice and taking it to heart. I recommend this camp to any young basketball players who may be looking for a little bit more to really put them over the top because I promise you, you will pick something up at this camp.

Outdoor Party Themes

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

There are different party themes you may use to create a beautiful outdoor party. Look through the list below and see which one will fit best the personalities of the people that are going to attend your outdoor party.

Dining by Candlelight
Why not take a traditional dinner with candlelight in an outdoor venue. Hang some white lights on a tree and put the table under the tree. It creates an instant enchanted look. You can also try putting some torch stands around the garden. So you can hit two birds with one stone, you can try and get the candles that repel insects.

Pool or Beach Party
This is really not a unique concept but you can most certainly give it a unique twist. Start with the invitation. Attach a pair of sunglasses and sunblock when you give it out to your guest. The details of the party may be found on the label of the sunblock. Having a pool is necessity but you can put several children’s pool with lots of ice to chill drinks. Use beach pail as utensil holders at every table. You can do more activities like water balloon fight, bubble blowing, sand castle game, and others.

Patriotic Theme
Send out invitations with a creative interpretation of your country’s flag. Use the theme red, blue and white in it (or whatever the color of your flag is). You cannot use the flag as table cloth as you may get sued for that but you can use the colors. You can make special placemats with different interesting historical facts about your country. You can ask your servers to dress up as historical figures.

Pick Up Party
Tell your friends that when and where the party is going to be will be unannounced and you will just show up in their house to pick them up as they are. They cannot dress, cannot take a bath, cannot fix themselves up. They will proceed to the party with you how you found them. The one thing that is exciting is seeing everyone in their most unguarded moments.

I hope this got you off started in some of the things you need to prepare for your party. Always remember that what remains to be the most essential thing is having the people that are most important to you during a party. That will surely make your time a great one.

3 Features About Home Tanning Beds

Monday, July 5th, 2010

A lot of people love the thought of owning tanning beds. A bed at your residence will help you to tan if you want, day or night. You won’t be required to drive across town or rush to access the salon before they close. Although they can be expensive, if you tan regularly, the investment may be well worth the money in the long run.

3 Things to Look for in Tanning Beds

The Model of the Bed

You basically have two choices in the design of your bed: a traditional horizontal bed and a standing booth. Unless you have a room or large space to devote to a horizontal bed, you may want to consider a standing booth. These take up less space in your home and can be placed in a corner. Basically, your preference and the amount of space you have available will dictate this choice.

The Bulbs Used in the Bed

The type of tanning bed bulbs found in a bed are the most important feature. Beds use either UVA and UVB rays or UVA only. There is controversy over which bulbs are safer for your skin. There really is no safe way to tan, and you should take precautions to protect yourself from damage to your skin, regardless of the bulbs used.

You need to know exactly which kinds of bulbs are used in your bed when it is time to replace them. Bulbs aren’t interchangeable and you need to be sure to buy the right ones. Also, look at the placement of the bulbs. How easy will they be to replace? You will most likely be performing this task yourself and you want to be sure it will be easy to do.

Extra Features

The best extra features to look for include a face tanner and a cooling system. The face tanner will help you get the ultimate tan all over your body. These have specially placed bulbs in the facial area that direct light to this area, which is difficult to tan for many people.

A cooling system is important if you get easily over heated inside a bed. The cooling fan will keep your skin from getting too hot. Make sure you don’t overdo it in the bed with this feature. Just because you don’t feel the heat, doesn’t mean you aren’t tanning. Staying in the bed too long contributes to over exposure and can be dangerous for your skin.

Choices in Home Tanning Beds

Most home beds are traditional tan beds. These use typical bulbs that resemble fluorescent tubes. Another choice in beds are known as High Pressure Beds. These use high pressure quartz bulbs, rather than the traditional lamps. They are called high pressure because the gas in the bulb is slightly higher than the pressure in the atmosphere.

These beds allow you to tan on only one side at a time. You will need to turn over half way through your session. Many people find these to be more comfortable than traditional beds. These are normally found in salons, but you may come across one if you shop for used equipment.

Purchasing Used Tanning Beds

A used bed can be an affordable option to an expensive new home bed. In many cases, you can find a high quality bed at the price of a cheap bed. There are some things you should consider before purchasing a new bed:

o Make sure the bed you are considering meets the current federal and state safety regulations. These change often and you want to make sure the bed you buy is safe. A tanning salon owner is a good source of information regarding safety regulations. The internet is another good source of information, as most states post regulations for salon owners.

o Find out how often the bed was used. If it was originally found in a salon, it has probably gotten quite a bit of use. Sometimes beds that have been purchased for home use end up getting very little use. These can be great, giving you a little used bed at a substantially reduced price.

o Compare the price difference of the used bed with a brand new bed. The bigger the difference, the better for you.

o Ask about the working condition and any repairs that have been done. Also ask when the bulbs were last replaced and about the maintenance that has been done. You want a bed that has been properly maintained.

o Ask if there is any time left on the warranty.

Safety Essential For The Backcountry

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Hiking and backcountry travel has increased in popularity over the past several years. All ages can easily participate and it is a great way to escape the challenges of city living. The exercise and fresh are added bonuses. And whether you are going out for one night or several, your enjoyment will be enhanced if your trip is organized and you are prepared for any challenge.

Experienced hikers and backcountry experts are quite familiar with the best equipment required to enjoy the trip. However, not many consider the need for personal self defense while in the wilderness. Unfortunately, crime is not limited to metropolitan areas and even though a cell phone might work while away from cities and roads, a 911 response might not be possible in the event of an emerging threat.

As you are packing, check your camping equipment and make sure that everything is in good order and you have included some personal defense products such as Defense Sprays, tasers, or stun guns.

Commonly known as “OC,” pepper sprays or self defense sprays are very effective. When applied, they irritate the eyes and impede the vision of the threatening individual. These are non-life-threatening when applied and can be easily carried with a belt carrier or in a pocket. Pepper sprays are usually made up of highly concentrated cayenne pepper compounds and – believe it or not – are essentially organic in nature.

Taser weapons can also be effective in fending off an intruder. New Taser C2 units are available for consumers and are the same as those used by law enforcement agencies. Tasers can be very effective for debilitating a threatening individual from up to 15 feet.

Personal safety is an individual responsibility – even in the backcountry. Many hazards exist for the backpacker and hiker without consideration of personal safety, so being prepared is important. The ability to remain composed while under threat as well as the availability of a defense spray, taser or other tool is absolutely essential in dealing with a surprise threat.

Bad things do happen in the backcountry. Older hikers may recall that back in 1974, a grave containing remains of several young women was found in Washington State. These turned out to be the victims of Ted Bundy – who preyed upon unprepared women who were engaged in outdoor recreation.

People backpack for different reasons. Some do it for the great exercise, some because of the adventure and love of nature. Others backpack as a way to learn and explore the outdoors. Whatever the reason, there are large and expanding numbers of backpackers. They explore and they love the wilderness, and have the common goal of a safe backpacking experience which can provide memories that last a lifetime.

Ways To Conserve Energy In Your Home

Monday, June 28th, 2010

While Canada is one of the best countries to live in, the fact remains that our climate is unpredictable and residents are forced to spend large amounts of money in the winter to heat their homes, and to spend just as much money in the summer to cool them down.

It is just early June and already residents of Canada have been forced to shell out cash due to intense heat waves. Not only is the heat incapacitating, it can be dangerous for the elderly and for those who do not remember to keep their bodies hydrated. Therefore, spending money on cooling costs is not luxurious spending. It is essential to the wellbeing of the average Canadian.

In addition to the extra spending, Canadians must remain conscious that the energy being used to cool their homes not only leaves a hole in their wallets, it also increasingly damages our environment by using up precious resources. The question remains as to how we can reduce our energy costs and conserve at the same time, while still maintaining a basic need.

There are some easy ways to reduce your cooling costs, and remain environmentally friendly at the same time. Canadians are now starting to follow these easy tips. If you live in a sunny home, close the blinds. While sunshine is lovely, it can greatly increase the heat generated in your home. If you want the sunlight, close the blinds during 12pm and 2pm, which are the hottest hours of the day.

Buy an air-conditioning system sized appropriately for your home. If you only have a small space you wish to keep cool, purchase a small system. Consult with the person selling the system and ask for their best opinions with regards to space and size.

Ensure that your air-conditioning condenser is not crowded or blocked by other pieces of furniture and that it is located in a shady spot of the room.

Awnings can be installed over sunny spots of your house. Turn off the air conditioner when you are not home. Maintain repairs to your unit, and change the filter monthly.

Make sure the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) is 13 or better. If a machine is less efficient than this, it will cost more to run. If you don’t use particular rooms of your house, close the ducts and shut the doors.

Make sure your ducts are not covered by furniture. Turn off your televisions and computers when they are not in use because they generate heat. When you are not using lights, turn them off, as they also generate heat. Most of your home’s heat is absorbed through the roof; make sure your attic is properly ventilated.

If Canadians follow these simple tips they can drastically reduce their energy bills in the summer.

There are also ways that you can calculate your cooling by going to Natural Resources Canada: http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/residential/personal/cooling-ventilation/rooms-ac/cost-calculation.cfm

This will help you figure out how much you are spending, and how you can reduce you costs.
